Pennsylvania Hare Scramble The Pennsylvania Hare Scramble was held at Rausch Creek where they had a GNCC a couple of years ago. The area is know for being really rocky. The Hare Scramble used to be held just down the road and I always enjoyed that race so I was looking forward to pounding some rocks. The turnout for the race was pathetic. For the race there were only 53 competitors but they had over ten pros which would still make it tough to have a good finish. The start was in a rock pile. I got a midpack start and Brian was behind me. Immediately I didn't feel comfortable in the rocks or in tune with the bike. Brian passed me just a mile into the race and was looking good. The course was really rocky to the point where some sections were all rock and no dirt. I just couldn't get myself to go fast during the race and basically rode trail pace all day. When I came in for gas I saw Brian in the pits. He ran out of fun for the day and packed it up. I continued for the last couple laps and was happy to see the checkered flag. Barry Hawk won the race. He got a poor start and crashed as he was trying to pass me. He got going again and I moved over for him. He waved as he went bye but was distracted and missed an arrow and went off course. He still managed to turn around and pass the field. That was very impressive to me. Mike Lafferty was second after having his chain derail on the first lap. Mike also charged through the pack all day and didn't give up. Nate Kanney had the best ride of his season for third overall. |
