Funky Chicken Hare Scramble

Brian Wins!!!

We had a big crowd going up to Oregon.  Shane Watts already had travel arrangements to come out to the race so Brian, Brooke, and Shane took the box van up.  Our Dad, Big Al was going to race so he and I caught a ride up with Mikey from Topspeed.  When we got there things were a little dry but otherwise it was awesome.  The race is held on a two thousand acre ranch bordering the Umpqua River.  It stages on top of a mountain that has a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains.  We hung out on Saturday watching the races then taking a swim in the river along with some fishing.  Brian was already for the race on Sunday and had the plan of to get out front early and let everyone else eat his dust.  When the banner dropped he and Fred Andrews shot ahead of the others toward the first corner.  Brian had a slight edge on Fred but Fred was on the inside and took the lead.  Brian was determined to make a pass and was looking for a way around on the grass track.  He finally made the pass leaving the grass track and was the first one in the woods.  Brian was comfortable early with the familiar conditions and put the hammer down opening up a lead of 45 seconds on the first lap alone.  He didn't let up after that and put nearly a minute on the field each lap of the race to take the win with over five minutes to spare.  Fred Andrews settled in for second followed by a host of D-36 racers.  Rob Zimmerman made his second podium in two years at this race with a third place finish, ahead of Craig Wesner.  Brian Spearle finished fifth, but was in a strong third for most of the race until he hit a log trying to get around a lapper and smacked his face on the ground.  His left eye swelled shut and he had a nasty cut that used to be his lip but Spearle is as tough as they come and finished the race strong.  Al had a good time in the race.  He was worried about having to race for three hours since he gets tired practicing in about five minutes.  He said he was tired halfway though the race but got a second wind and finished strong taking the win in the 50+ class.
