Nixon I haven't ridden in the desert in a long time so the day before the race I stopped by Moonrocks to get used to the conditions, the dust, and the desert in general. Moonrocks is a fun place to ride and I was feeling pretty good. At the end of the day I was doing a hillclimb and my front wheel caught a rock as I was powersliding the turn in the hill. I just lowsided but caught my thumb underneath the handlebars and sprained my thumb. I have sprained the thumb a few times before but never this bad. I limped it back to the truck and put it on ice in order to try to do some quick healing before the race. I knew if it wasn't feeling considerably better I wouldn't be able to hold on. I went out to the track and worked on my bike a bit, then checked out the track. For what they had to work with Russ and the other club guys did a really good job. There was the motocross track, a grass track, and a bunch of rocky roads. The next day the thumb was feeling a tiny bit better so I geared up to give it a shot. I was a little late lining up for the start so I was on the outside but got a good jump and ended up about fifth. I made a couple passes on the smooth grass track up to third before hitting the rocks. I couldn't really hold on but I wanted to push off the start and put as many people and as much dust behind me early in the race. I came around the first lap in fifth but started to drop off after that. Up front Spearle was going for it and after getting the holeshot he was going for the win. I was having trouble and the more I rode the more it hurt and people were passing me. I wasn't going to quit so I just rode smooth and tried to do what I could. Just over halfway Spearle crashed while passing a lapper and put himself out of the race. That gave the lead to John Wear for a lap but Ryan Powell was riding hard and wanted to win. Ryan put a pass on John on the last lap to take his first district overall win. I dropped off pretty bad at the end and finished about fifteenth on the day. I am still leading the points going into the summer break so I will heal up and be ready for the fall season. |
