Missouri Hare Scramble 2000

For the last race of our trip we went to Missouri for the Mule Kicker.  This has always been one of our favorite races and this year was even better.  Usually it is over 100 degrees but the heat wave broke and it was just in the upper 80’s.  The traction was as good as it gets in the trees and you could see knobby marks in the dirt from the bike ahead of you.  They put down a bunch of sand on the motocross track so it was even more loamy than normal.  Blackwell got the holeshot with local Chris Theile right behind him.  Brian and I were third and forth with Wattsy charging hard trying to pass.  He went to pass Brian on a big single on the moto track and right when he left the ground we knew he was in trouble.  Upon landing his bike stuck and his heels touched the back of his head.  I had to ride off of the track to avoid hitting him.  We all freight trained the first lap with Brain in third and I was fifth behind Paul Edmondson.  At the end of the lap I heard a buzzing and noticed it was Shane already up in the lead pack.  I knew we were in trouble.  He got around me but I was able to stay with him for the next two laps.  On the third lap Brian got in trouble getting behind a lap rider in a mud hole dropping him back to seventh.  After the gas Shane dropped out with a broken clutch line and Paul and I were about thirty seconds behind Blackwell.   Brian had another problem trying to get around a kid on an 80.  He went to pass but the kid pulled over right in front of Brian sending him into a ditch.  We kept on charging and I was in contention until the last lap when I had to stop for a splash of fuel.  That let the leader get away and I ended up a minute down at the finish for third place.  Brian ended up with a fifth.  Other local d-36 riders were Eric Ducray who was tenth overall, Eric Koehler in 13th, Craig Wesner, and Brian Barrington a B open rider going for the class title rode to a second place finish.  For the championship Brian and I are still in the hunt for the title, with Brian in third and Patrick in fourth with three rounds remaining.
