Wisp Mountain GNCC There was a late event change and for the first time the GNCC series was going to Maryland for a new race on a ski resort called Wisp Mountain. For the first time in ten years there was now a rock run on the schedule. There were some fun open sections along the groomed ski runs and some really technical rocky trails in between. Brian got off to a midpack start and finished the first lap in seventh place. The rocks were a new twist for most of the guys making the event more grueling than normal. Rodney Smith, Jason Raines, and Mike Lafferty were in a serious battle for the lead and pulled out a couple minute lead. On the last lap Jason was third and put on a last lap charge and got passed Lafferty. He was flying out of the trees and was coming up to a rise that you could jump and hit it pinned. Witnesses from the lift chairs said that you could see him hit the jump so hard he hit a tree branch that close lined him off his bike. He looped it out and when he came down it broke his leg. Lafferty was right behind him and thought his throttle had stuck he hit the jump so hard. Rodney won the race with Lafferty finishing second. Fred Andrews won out on the battle for third with fellow Ohio riders Robbie Jenks who finished fourth and Chuck Woodford who dropped back to sixth behind the charging Kiedrowski. Brian rode consistent all day and stayed off the ground for an eighth place behind Steve Hatch. Andy Shea was next winning the 250 A class once again and was the only A rider to make the top ten, followed by Josh Mclevy. Jason still holds the points lead over Lafferty and hopes to be back for the next round in Ohio after the summer break. |
