Kentucky GNCC Another perfect day greeted the racers once again. This time they were in Sparta, Kentucky for the sixth round of the GNCC. Brian has been having a good showing in his first year of GNCC racing finishing with two 7ths, a 4th, and two 12ths. Milt and Doug came to Kentucky to help Brian out with pit duties as they have done at all the GNCC's this year. Shane Watts was making his return to racing after breaking his wrist in late January. They were at a new location this year that was supposed to be very nice and was located at the top of a large hill. Brian got a killer start rounding the first turn in third place behind Robbie Jenks and Jason Raines. Brian ran up front for a while then let Lafferty by him and got passed by the Kawi's of Fred Andrews and Chuck Woodford. Robbie Jenks has stepped it up and has been riding awesome and led for the first three laps. Brian stayed there for a while until they got to the grass track section where he got passed. He was surprised to get passed on the grass track since it is open terrain where he usually does better. Brian dropped back to eighth where he got into a fun battle with Doug Blackwell. Shane Watts had gotten a midpack start but didn't feel as well as he hoped and actually got passed and was at the back of the pack after the first lap. He made some passes on the next lap but his wrist wasn't up to par yet and pulled out after three laps. Lafferty had made his way up to the point of the field and was looking sure for another win. Rodney Smith was in the second position, then Raines, Jenks, Woodford, and Andrews who then went way off a cliff and dropped back. Lafferty was leading late in the race. There was a section about three miles long that was tight and tough that had a quick turn to a big hill. Mark Hyde does the helmet cam for the GNCC series and got the camera crew in position for some good shots of the tough hill on the last lap and then tried to get up the hill himself to film the lead pack. The only thing is that he didn't make it up the hill and was stuck on the hill when Rodney Smith and the rest of the pack got to the hill. Lafferty got caught up with Mark, which ended Lafferty's shot at the win. The next lap in that sectionRodney made it to the off camber multi lined hill first and lost his momentum so he drifted to lower ground to make it up. Jason Raines got a good drive at the hill and passed Rodney to take his third win on the season and extended his points lead over Lafferty. Rodney was pleased with second as was Robbie Jenks making the podium in third. Lafferty recovered for fourth followed by Chuck Woodford. Brian got his self together passed Kiedrowski and caught up to Barry Hawk and they diced it out the last lap. They had a good battle on the grass track with Brian trying to outside in Hawk in the turns and actually got passed Hawk at one point only to over shoot the next turn. Barry Hawk finish in sixth, and Brian took another seventh. Blackwell finished in eigth, then Kiedrowski, and Randy Hawkins rounded out the top ten. |
