Illinois Hare Scramble Brian spent the two weeks before the race training in Illinois in order to prepare for the race and not overheat like he did in Michigan. In Racer X they had an article about a track just south of the Quad Cities that was supposed to be the roughest and sandiest track ever run in the Nationals. Brian hunted that track down and rode it a couple of times and said that they were right. He then went south and hung out with Illinois Troy. That area has lots of good woods riding like the White City Club property which has 500 acres of single track, then some hidden trails out back of Hucks and the Rackeys that are real good. Brian said he felt way better at dealing with the heat after two weeks of riding in it. That was a good thing because on race day it was hot and humid. Brian got off to a good start and was battling for the lead on the moto track. Him and Fred came into a corner hot and both went way wide. Brian made the corner but Fred fell to the back of the pack. Brain got into the lead but was having some trouble with the course. They had a race there earlier in the year that was muddy and it left the course with a bunch of deep dried ruts. Brian was still leading going into a section of course that was rolling stripped mined area when he came to a mound and hit a rock off the back side of it and crashed back to third behind Chuck Woodford and Doug Blackwell. Brian kept third until Fred worked his through the pack and passed Brian. The top positions stayed the same through the race with Chuck Woodford taking his second win of the series, followed by past champ Doug Blackwell, Fred Andrews, Brian, and Blair Bersano. |
