Ignacio WORCS I was contemplating not even go to this race since it was so far and Brian was back east doing a GNCC (which was later cancelled) the same weekend. I then found out this race was supposed to be tighter than the other WORCS races so I was interested in going. Right about then Eric DuCray from Nor Cal suspension gave me a call and asked what my plans were. We hooked up after Motodoc's riding seminar and were off to Colorado. The race took place in the mountains of Colorado near the four corners. There was some trees in the area and a good amount of rock. The place had a small motocross track that looked more like a practice track than a full on race course by the lack of a starting gate. Eric brought the whole shop with him, including Buck and Tony along with Nikki and Andy who was riding the 80 class. Everyone was riding early races so I raced the 250 race. There was a good field of racers for the 250 race. I got off to a midpack start but lost a couple of spots on the motocross track. When we got into the woods I began making up a few spots. Ty Davis was out front and was looking like he was going to be hard to beat. I really liked the track. It had an easy motocross track then we headed out to the woods. It wasn't real tight but there was good single track through the trees with some rocks thrown in to keep us honest. It was a bit dusty but compared to the last race in Price it wasn't too bad and it wasn't nearly as fast which makes it a lot safer. Ty won the race ahead of Russ Peason and Destry. I had a fun race and finished in Sixth. Buck and Tony both had good races, Andy finished in fourth in his race and Nikki smoked the women's class. We woke up way too early on Sunday. Eric had the Vet race which he won at 7:30. I slept on the way to the race and when we got there sprawled out across the back seat and got another hour sleep. We did a parade lap which I needed since I usually take a while to get up to speed. We did a like engine start with no gate and if we jumped the start we would get penalized. I got a good jump off the line and was in about eighth spot. We did a complete lap around the motocross track before heading into the trees. I would have liked going right into the woods off the start since the motocross track was my week spot and I was passed by one or two guys on the track. Going into the woods I was still in good position and tried to charge early. I was hooked up with Joey Lanza and we passed each other back and fouth a few times. I passed Joey on the Pro only technical rocky section then he got me back on the moto track. The next lap I got back by Joey in the same technical section. I spent the next couple laps catching up to Kellon Walsh and got by him when he stalled it on the motocross track. I came in to pit that same lap for gas. I had a small hole in my gas tank so I was going through lots of gas during the race. Kellon passed my back when I was in the pits and I charged back up to him on that lap. I made my way by him and was riding good. This race had more hot lines than I have ever seen during a race. Normally there are a few lines that come about during a race but at this race just about every corner was clipped. There were also some lines that could have been called cheating and some guys must have been looking for ways to cut more than racing the track. With a couple of laps left my clutch went out. I was pissed because I was in tenth and I haven't been in the top ten yet this year in the WORCS series. The last two laps I rode perfect without touching the clutch lever and didn't lose any ground to the guys behind me. Nathan Woods rode an awesome race holding off Ty Davis all day for another win. He is leading the points this year and keeps extending his lead at each race. Ty finished second ahead of Russ Peason for a Zip Ty racing clean sweep on the podium. Destry Abbott rode in third for much of the day but was passed by Russ near the end of the race. David Pearson was fifth followed by Bobby Bonds, Robert Naughton, Kurt Casselli, Bryce Olsen, then myself. It was a good race and personally I would like to see more WORCS races like this. When I was done Eric and the rest of the Nor Cal crew loaded up my bike as I got off it and were ready to go. We drove straight through and were home in time for work on Monday morning. |
