Arizona WORCS

I went to the District 36 banquet on Saturday night to award the top three in each enduro and cross country so I missed Saturday's races.  Brian raced the 250 race but wadded up his Nor Cal backed Suzuki so he just used the rest of the race to get familiar with the course.

I flew in Sunday morning and had Mikey from TopSpeed pick me up at the airport.  He rode my bike on Saturday and the clutch fluid had gotten low so he had KTM fix it the morning of the race.  I only had about an hour to get everything together for the race.  Brian was motivated to do his best.  He gave me a few pointers about the track.  Basically he said it was fast with square edged bumps.  We got a parade lap around the motocross track so at least I had a chance to see what the jumps looked like.  I missed qualifying on Saturday so I was the last one to get a start spot.  I lined up behind Kiedrowski on the new 450 Suzuki and Nathan Wood, both of who were on four strokes and usually get good starts.  Brian had a decent spot on the inside and was all set to go.  Neither Brian and I got a very good start.  There were about fifty pros in the race and we were just about mid pack, with Brian a few spots ahead of me.  I always start slow but I tried to push hard right away even though I didn't know the track like everyone else.  Charging hard kept me about the same pace as the rest of the guys around me.  I rode the first half of the race battling with Nathan Kanney until he had problems in the endurocross section and bent up him bike and called it a day.  Brian had some arm pump the first couple of laps and couldn't make his way forward.  Brian was the hero of the endurocross section.  They put some rocks and telephone poles near the finish line.  Brian was the only rider to double the telephone poles and he passed Caselli through that section one lap.  About halfway Brian got through his arm pump and started to charge harder.  He made his way up into the top fifteen and was pushing hard enough to make himself sick by the end of the race.  I didn't really feel that good during the race and didn't ride the way I wanted to.  I have trouble with the Desert moto tracks and never really feel comfortable in those conditions.  Kiedrowski won his first race on the new RMZ making a statement that he was back in the WORCS series and meant business.  Lance Smail rode a strong race for second ahead of the defending series champion Nathan Woods.  Brian rode his butt off but could only muster a 13th.  I didn't ride too strong a finished 25th.
