Sapiago Springs

We didn’t make it to Texas for the FMF National Enduro so we went up into the Sierras for a local race in Pipi Valley.  There was still some moisture in the ground from the rain earlier in the week, which made the trees perfect with the fireroads a little dusty.  Brian was racing his new KTM 250 EXC for the first time and I was on the 200 again.  For the start we had to stand next to our bikes and wait for the gun.  I kicked my sidepanel on the way over and got a dead last start.  Brian did much better and got a third place start and quickly passed the other two riders in front.  He kept a fast pace going and opened up a big early lead.  Halfway threw the lap he wheelied a waterbar and got kicked over the bars.  He knocked himself out pretty good and said it was a long time until anyone came by.  I was working my way around riders one at a time and was fifth at the end of the first lap, second on the second lap and got around Rod Kreis for the lead on the third.  I knew making the whole race on gas was going to possible, but I was planning on playing it safe and getting a splash.  When in the lead I put in a couple of good laps and opened up over a minute lead going in to pit.  It was a good thing since I didn’t have my IMS drybreak and had to use a regular can.  When I was done neither Troy or I could get on my stubborn gas cap so I ate up all of my lead dealing with the pits.  I went out for the last lap and just rode smoothly to take the win.  Brian got back into the race and put in some seat time but his race was effectively done when he crashed.
